System Requirements:

PC System Requirements
Windows XP or Windows Vista (32bit) with latest Service Pack
Intel Pentium 4 2,0 GHz, Pentium M 1,3 GHz or equivalent AMD Athlon XP
Windows XP: 256 MB RAM (512 MB recommended)
Windows Vista: 512 MB RAM (1 GB recommended)
Sound/graphics controllers with support for DirectX 9 or higher
Hard disk with min. 1 GB free space (20 GB free capacity recommended for TV recording)
Free USB 2.0 port
DVD-ROM drive or DVD writer
Internet connection for software updates and activations

However I reckon you need to up the PC CPU Spec up quite a bit as a 1.3 Ghz processor sounds a bit optimisitic to me.

My computer is 10 feet from the window and the stick does not have any major problem picking up the TV signal, given that the analogue signal at my house tends to be weak. The only problem is sometimes the picture and the sound are slightly out of sync – I’m not sure if this is due to signal / stick / my computer / software. The software on the CD installed without problems but it took almost 15 min. However, it seems a bit bloated and is slow to install and to load each time you want to watch TV.

Installation was much more straight forward in Ubuntu Linux 8.04 if you know what you are doing despite the manufacturer says it is not supported, and the Linux software is quicker and easier to use as well. I am using Kaffeine from Ubuntu’s repository, and you will need to download drivers for the stick. Details on how to do this are here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=856069

The Linux / Kaffeine software also seems to be faster at scanning for channels than the Windows software supplied. Bought the Pinnacle Nano stick after testing a cheap noname DVBT stick. With the old one I had fewer channels and unacceptable performance after 20 minutes of uninterrupted usage (probably due to overheating of the device). The Pinnacle stick performs absolutely fantastic and is worth investing into.
The result is truly ground-breaking – giving people a powerful, stylish and convenient way to share information, photos, music, personal content and stay connected to the Internet at home and on the move. And for that extra touch of style, the superb look and feel of its ultra-compact and elegant chassis is accentuated with a choice of colours and haptic styling. Even though it is one of the world’s lightest netbook in its 10.2″ class, weighing just 1.33kg with a powerful 6 cell battery, the NC10′s innovative design is packed with the latest technology for maximum mobility and productivity. It also incorporates a range of practical features, like a normal-size, ergonomic notebook PC style keyboard, to simplify life on the move. So when you need to stay in touch, but want to make a good impression the NC10 makes complete sense.

Product Description
The ultra-slim, ultra-lightweight and incredibly smart NC10 netbook from Samsung is a versatile computing solution that’s ideal for users on the move. Underneath its superb sapphire blue case, you’ll find an Atom N270 processor and 1024 MB of RAM to ensure all your applications run smoothly and with great stability. The NC10 is perfect for keeping in touch when you’re out and about as it’s wireless-enabled (802.11b/g) and even has a built-in webcam. There is even a 10.2″ screen where you can admire 1024×600-pixel graphics without straining your eyes, even after intensive use. Bluetooth compatibility makes for quick and easy data exchange between other Bluetooth devices, and you can even hook up several different external devices at once thanks to the NC10′s three USB 2.0 ports. The Samsung NC10 is the perfect portable PC for all your personal and professional needs!

This is an excellent netbook which has it all including the usual spec of 1Gb RAM, an Intel Atom 270 processor but with a slightly larger hard drive than one might expect at 160Gb. The only additional thing I could think of is that it lacks a SIM card slot for integrated mobile broadband – you still have to have a USB dongle sticking out of it. Otherwise it is well proportioned with an excellent keyboard/screen(10.2″ widescreen) and built in Bluetooth. The integrated camera offers amazing quality even in low light and battery life is exceptionally good at around 4-5 hours. Overall, hard to criticise and a worthy entry to the netbook arena from Samsung.

The Samsung seems to address all of these issues. Ideal size (10″), great screen (incredibly bright and clear), fantastic battery (I’m getting between 4-5 hours with normal i.e. pretty intense use)… and it looks lovely. It’s miles away the best-looking netbook available. The keyboard is also very good… and I am very picky when it comes to this. My only complaint is the mousepad which is very small, very black and very hard to see except in very good light.

Software wise, it runs everything I’ve tried… including Office 2007, which it runs perfectly. Firefox is also great on it (I run it in full-screen mode). It comes with Windows XP and SP 3 pre-installed. Skype is stunning on it. It really makes video calling a pleasure (using its built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam).

Netbooks, only been around a year or two but already a huge market with mature products such as this NC10. If you, like me have read all you can read on Netbooks, then you will know that the NC10 is one of the best of the 10″ netbooks around.

Price: £199.99 GBP

The Acer Aspire One is a stylish and ultra mobile netbook, ideal for surfing the web, doing emails and messenger as well as basic computing functions like writing letters and doing simple spreadsheets. With its stunning 8.9 inch screen with built in webcam, 95% keyboard and unique yet intuitive interface, you will find the Aspire One a pleasure to use. Want one? Aspire One!

Weighing less than 1KG* and with dimensions that are smaller than the average diary, the Aspire One is fits into the palm of your hands, making it simple to carry by hand or even in a handbag.

Acer Aspire One A150-Aw Netbook, Linpus Linux Lite version, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 120GB HD (Seashell White)

One of the neatest features of the Aspire One is the unique operating system which is created on Linux Linplus. This simple-to-use system is based on clear icons, similar to a mobile phone system, which are launched by simply clicking on them, which makes it intuitive to use and simple to master.

One of the key aspects to any Netbook is the keyboard size, too small and you can’t use it properly, too big and the whole system needs to be made bigger. Acer has managed to get a 95% keyboard into its 8.9 inch netbook, one of the largest for the size, making this netbook a pleasure to type on.

Connectivity is vital with a netbook, both to the internet and to other devises. For strong internet connectivity Acer has both wired and wireless internet connectivity options. To connect to other devises there are 3 USB ports as well as VGA output and sharing data between devises is easy with the built in multicard reader.

The Aspire is not just another ultra-mobile notebook its a communications device designed to deliver continuous access to the internet and a simplified wireless experience no matter where you are. The Aspire one was designed to get you online in no time at all and thanks to the LinpusTM Linux Lite operating system, start up and shut down times are reduced to the minimum. With the Aspire one running on Linux environment, the simplicity continues with the intuitive and specifically optimized software interface. Acer’s Aspire One is equipped with an Intel Atom processor, specially designed for low-cost UMPC’s, and runs on both Linux and Windows. Other features include an 8.9-inch screen, from 1GB of RAM, a built-in WiFi connection and expandable memory upto 4 gigabytes.

In the final analysis, HD/Linux won out and even though I’ve had the A150-Aw for all of three hours, I gotta say this is one impressive (light) piece of kit. Surprise gift straight out the box: battery was holding 90% charge implying 1:56hrs playtime remaining so fun ensued. My laptop use is predominantly PowerPoint/Video editing for training purposes, so as my XDA Orbit handles the email, calendar and note scribbling, I couldn’t justify like for like replacement costs for my hefty Multivision. Key issue for me was faster and lighter the better. Irony is, I spent most of the last few months agonising about switching to an iPhone 3G at higher cost. Guess my Apple yearnings will have to wait, the Acer for £248 was just too good to ignore. So, it’s Open Office Impress v PowerPoint let battle commence, can always drop in M$ if needed, XP and Office – the 120Gb HD will allow that.

The upgrade is only for those competent and confident enough to risk their £200 machine. If you take your time though it is a great cheap upgrade. The hardest part is separating the top of the PC from the bottom and requires a little bravery as the clips do grip very well and reconnecting the lcd ribbon cable is a little fiddly also and as with all memory chips you need a vice like grip to get the chip to click in place.

The battery life of your 9 cell ACER Aspire One UMPC is limited like any other device containing rechargeable batteries. The battery capacity of the ACER Aspire One UMPC drops every time you use it. This replacement battery will extend the life of your ACER Aspire One UMPC. When the available battery time is shortened considerably a probable cause is that the battery of the ACER Aspire One UMPC has reached the end of its life. The battery life of the ACER Aspire One will vary according to how it is stored charged and through general operating conditions.

This battery has three times the capacity of the standard battery, and not unsurprisingly requires three times the space. Basically, I now have a battery with a netbook attached to it. Just imagine that a second battery pack is added behind the standard pack, and a third battery pack underneath. If that is what you want, get it!

As the photos suggest, it’s a big beast. If the aesthetics of the Aspire particulary appeal to you, then you might be put off by having a big lumpy battery pack hanging off the back. On the other hand, if you regard your Aspire as a proper mobile work horse then you may find yourself really growing to love the way the battery pack acts both as an angled keyboard rest and a handgrip – holding the Aspire in one hand whilst you type/mouse away with the other hand is now quite comfortable and secure.

Since getting this battery, my Aspire has been turned from being a cute little toy into something more serious. It can be taken out for the day and be actually used without wondering about the battery going flat It would be nice if it could be a bit lighter and if the outer casing was a better match for the Aspire. The larger battery successfully extends the runtime of your Aspire.

If you have just got a “Three” USB modem such as the Huawei E220 you should be able to connect without too much difficulty (although the process still needs smoothing out a bit). However some people have noticed issues with the type of IP address they receive from the network. Apparently under XP they are assigned a “real IP” of 92.40.61.* but under Linux get a “private” IP (10.119.64.*). You can get more control following the Mac instructions, and using an ASN address “three.co.uk” rather than “3internet.”

Should your USB be a Huawei E169G, then things might be a little more fiddly. Try following the instructions at Liam Green-Hughes.

Also check out Dale Lane’s blog where he done a write up on getting the device working. The main extra utility required for the Eee is the USB Switcher application, allowing you to decide which part of the device is available to the OS.

Vodafone have a dedicated open source team known as Betavine. They produce the Vodafone Mobile Connect (VMC) application and you don’t have to be a Vodafone customer to use it.

The most advanced and affordable Mac notebook ever gives you a blazingly fast mobile architecture in a beautiful design that costs less than slower, clunkier models. It’s like getting a sports car for the price of a scooter. Talk about performance, MacBook’s powered with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with speeds revving up to 2.0GHz.

Apple MacBook White 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/1GB/120/Combo/AP/BT

In bright white or sleek black, MacBook supports up to 2GB of memory and plenty of storage. Standard models offer up to 120GB of hard drive space, but if you haul a lot of data around, you can order your MacBook with up to 200GB of storage. That’s not all. MacBook keeps you untethered courtesy of built-in Bluetooth and AirPort Extreme (802.11g). A 6x double-layer-burning SuperDrive — standard equipment on the 2.0GHz models — not only lets you burn DVDs faster but lets you burn capacious double-layer media. And those 2.0GHz models pack 4MB of shared L2 cache, which helps deliver a 6x leap in performance over the iBook or PowerBook before them.

It took less than a day to get my head around the change of operating system, everything here looks so much better and simpler than on Windows, applications are lightening fast, taking almost no time to open, the equivalent of internet explorer (safari) loads web pages with almost no delay (unlike my Windows XP computer which really struggles along!). Compatability isn’t really an issue, Word, Excel and Powerpoint can all be purchased and although not quite up to the standard of the same applications on Windows they do the job and the new releases coming in late 2007 will be almost identical to the new Windows programs…

The most stunning application though must be Front Row, using the included remote you simply click the menu button and your desktop fades away to reveal the equivalent of Microsofts Media Centre, except this is simple, fast and looks great, you can access your music, photos, videos and a DVD all using the tiny remote!
